What you will practice

A clear purpose.

Communicate one encouragement while accurately describing the sequence and type of information involved in its development.

Bring with you

  • Paper with spaces for observation, inward experience, interpretation, and words shared
  • A timer
  • A Bible
  • A consenting partner

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 20 minutes

  1. 010–3 min

    Agree to participate

Ask permission for a short encouragement practice. Each person may choose a general conversation topic or a shared object as the starting point. Explain that participants will record how an observation and any inward impression unfold, with freedom to pass.

  2. 023–7 min

    Attend to what is present

Notice a detail in the agreed setting and describe it plainly. Keep outward observation separate from conclusions about the person. If you notice a body language cue, treat its meaning as open until the person explains their experience.

  3. 037–11 min

    Record the inward experience

Pray quietly and record any image, phrase, feeling, Scripture association, or intuitive thought. Mark the sequence as it actually unfolds. Revelation, interpretation, and application may overlap; record that overlap when it occurs. Quiet or uncertainty can also be recorded accurately.

  4. 0411–16 min

    Consider and communicate

Choose one possible meaning and examine it alongside a relevant biblical principle. Ask permission to share a brief encouragement. Explain the impression proportionately, speak with warmth, and leave space for the recipient to weigh it in their own context.

  5. 0516–20 min

    Reconstruct the sequence

Record the words shared and the response of the recipient. Draw connections among observation, inward experience, interpretation, and application using their actual order. Identify any added assumption and revise the account. Choose one communication improvement for future practice.

Fictional practice example

See the practice take shape.

A participant notices a carefully tended plant in the agreed practice setting. During prayer she thinks about steady care, then considers encouragement concerning patient service. She records the visible plant, the inward association, and the interpretation separately. Her partner appreciates the theme and identifies a current volunteer responsibility where patience matters.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

What did I observe externally, and what arose inwardly?

  2. 2

What was the actual sequence, including any overlap?

  3. 3

Which part of the encouragement was supported by the response of the recipient?

Your practice outcome

Create a complete sequence record and a brief encouragement with recipient feedback and one refinement.

Open the Q45 journey journal

Record your exercise number, observations, interpretation, open questions, and chosen response in your own journal or the existing account connected journal.

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

We will observe carefully, describe inward experiences precisely, and speak with care for the recipient.

Coach the practice

  • Let the recorded sequence follow the experience, including simultaneous developments.
  • Avoid interpreting appearance or emotion as proof of personal circumstances.
  • Keep feedback grounded in the words the recipient actually offers.

Debrief together

Have participants identify one accurate distinction and one assumption they refined.

Adapt for the people present

Use a shared object or fictional scenario when personal observation feels too exposing. Participants may complete the whole exercise in writing.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Use the four spaces to record one ordinary spiritual encouragement during the week and revisit its sequence afterward.
