What you will practice

A clear purpose.

Complete a three column record that makes the movement from experience to interpretation to action easy to examine.

Bring with you

  • Paper divided into three columns
  • One brief account used with permission
  • Bible

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Biblical foundations

Read with attention to context.

1 Corinthians 14:29 Read the passage

In the passage

Paul calls the community to weigh prophetic speech.

For this practice

Use a clear record to make the content and its interpretation available for thoughtful discernment.

James 3:17–18 Read the passage

In the passage

James describes heavenly wisdom through purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, good fruit, and sincerity.

For this practice

Use these qualities when considering an interpretation and its proposed response.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 18 minutes

  1. 010–2 min

    Name the columns

Label the page “What I perceived,” “Possible meaning,” and “Response to consider.” Add a small space for context, source, and confidence. Choose an account brief enough to examine carefully.

  2. 022–6 min

    Describe the experience

Enter exact words, visible details, inward images, or feelings in the first column. Use descriptive language and preserve the order where it matters. Mark uncertain details explicitly.

  3. 036–10 min

    Offer interpretations

Write one or two possible meanings in the second column. Explain what connects each meaning to the experience. Consider personal associations, biblical context, and ordinary explanations alongside the spiritual interpretation.

  4. 0410–15 min

    Consider responses

For each interpretation, identify a proportionate response such as prayer, further observation, counsel, or gentle encouragement. Ask whether the response preserves the recipient’s agency and reflects the character described in James.

  5. 0515–18 min

    Review the links

Draw a small line from each response to the interpretation supporting it. Invite a partner to identify any gap or assumption. Choose the next step and date the record for later review.

Fictional worked example

See the practice take shape.

A fictional participant records an inward picture of a bench. In the second column she considers rest and companionship. In the third she writes two possible responses: pray for wise rest and offer a friend a listening conversation. She asks the friend whether conversation would be welcome before acting.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

Which entry describes the experience most precisely?

  2. 2

Where is the connection between perception and meaning strongest?

  3. 3

Which proposed response is compassionate and proportionate to my confidence?

Your practice outcome

A completed three column record with contextual details, considered meanings, a selected next step, and a review date.

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

Explain the purpose of making each part of the reflection visible. A participant may complete only the columns for which they have material.

Coach the practice

  • Keep feelings and interpretations labeled accurately.
  • Allow multiple possible meanings to remain in view.
  • Invite practical responses that preserve freedom and dignity.

Debrief together

Invite participants to explain one row from perception through response. Ask where further context might change the interpretation.

Adapt for the people present

Use three spoken prompts, separate cards, or a scribe. Supply a fictional scenario for anyone who prefers to keep personal material private.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Use the same three columns after one future experience, then revisit them with any observed outcome in a separately dated note.
