First Attention

Notice what initially draws your attention and examine it prayerfully before assigning meaning.

12 minutesQuiet individual practice with optional partner discussion
Crimson and gold glass ribbons gather into a luminous bird.
Practice with care, courage, and discernment.

What you will practice

A clear purpose.

Record an initial point of attention, distinguish its observable features from associations, and choose a proportionate next step.

Bring with you

  • A quiet setting
  • A simple object or original image
  • Writing materials

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Biblical foundations

Read with attention to context.

Exodus 3:1–6 Read the passage

In the passage

Moses notices the burning bush and approaches within a particular biblical encounter with God.

For this practice

Consider attentiveness while preserving the uniqueness of the biblical account.

James 1:5 Read the passage

In the passage

James encourages believers who need wisdom to ask God.

For this practice

Let a request for wisdom accompany your reflection on what has drawn attention.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 12 minutes

  1. 010–2 min

    Settle and consent

Choose to participate silently, write, or observe. Pray for wisdom and love. Take a comfortable posture and let your attention rest on the supplied object, image, or ordinary surroundings.

  2. 022–4 min

    Record the first detail

Write the first feature you notice in concrete language: a color, edge, texture, sound, or relationship between objects. Include whether it arose through external observation, a thought, or an inward image.

  3. 034–7 min

    Explore associations

List two possible associations and explain why each came to mind. Include an ordinary personal association if relevant. Leave room for the observation to remain simply an observation while you reflect.

  4. 047–10 min

    Weigh a possible meaning

Consider whether one association supports a scriptural quality such as patience, compassion, or gratitude. Read a relevant passage in context. Keep your level of confidence explicit and invite further thought.

  5. 0510–12 min

    Choose a small response

Select a gentle response within your control: give thanks, pray, observe again, or offer ordinary encouragement with consent. Record the response separately from the initial detail.

Fictional worked example

See the practice take shape.

A participant first notices the worn handle of a cup. She associates it with repeated use and with familiar hospitality. She reflects on welcoming others, then chooses to offer a visitor a drink. Her record preserves the observed detail, the association, and the chosen response as separate entries.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

What first drew my attention in concrete terms?

  2. 2

Which associations arose from my own experience?

  3. 3

What response would be helpful even while the meaning remains open?

Your practice outcome

A brief record of the first detail, two possible associations, a discernment note, and a proportionate response.

Open the Q45 journey journal

Record your exercise number, observations, interpretation, open questions, and chosen response in your own journal or the existing account connected journal.

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

Invite attentiveness, curiosity, and freedom. Every participant may choose whether to share and how much to share.

Coach the practice

  • Ask for a concrete description before discussing meaning.
  • Keep the atmosphere unhurried and free of performance comparison.
  • Treat quiet observation as a valid participation outcome.

Debrief together

Ask volunteers to share the detail and the association as two distinct statements. Discuss how this distinction supports clearer discernment.

Adapt for the people present

Use an audio prompt, tactile object, or verbal description for participants who benefit from another sensory route. A participant can simply attend to a written Scripture passage.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

During one ordinary moment this week, record what drew your attention and one kind response that followed.
