Identify new observations, alternative interpretations, and contextual questions without losing the original sequence.

Bring with you

  • An original written impression or selected image
  • A second sheet of paper
  • A Bible
  • A timer

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Proverbs 18:17 Read the passage

In the passage

The proverb recognizes how further examination can change an initial account of a matter.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 15 minutes

  1. 010–2 min

    Secure the first record

Read the original account and preserve its exact wording. Date a new page for the second look. Identify what you noticed first, the interpretation you considered, and any action already taken. Keep these details separate from later additions.

  2. 022–6 min

    Return to observation

If an image or object is available, look again at its actual details. If you are revisiting a remembered experience, identify which details you clearly remember and which remain uncertain. Record new observations on the second page and mark when they arose.

  3. 036–10 min

    Explore another reading

Ask what another reasonable interpretation could be. Consider personal associations, current circumstances, and a relevant biblical passage in context. List the information that would strengthen or weaken each possible reading. Allow more than one possibility to remain open.

  4. 0410–13 min

    Choose a measured response

Review whether the new perspective changes the appropriate response. You may retain the original action, revise it, seek further counsel, or continue in prayer. Explain the reason in one sentence using the information now available.

  5. 0513–15 min

    Compare the two records

Place the records side by side and identify what remained stable, what changed, and what is still uncertain. Close with gratitude for careful attention and set an appropriate point for revisiting the matter if needed.

Fictional practice example

See the practice take shape.

A participant first notices an open doorway in an image and thinks about a new opportunity. On a second look, she notices a chair beside the doorway and considers hospitality. Both are recorded. With a forthcoming community welcome event in view, she chooses the modest application of helping someone feel included.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

Which details were present in the first account?

  2. 2

What did the second look add, and how certain am I about each addition?

  3. 3

What information would help distinguish the possible readings?

Your practice outcome

Produce two dated records and a comparison identifying stable details, additions, alternative readings, and the selected response.

Open the Q45 journey journal

Record your exercise number, observations, interpretation, open questions, and chosen response in your own journal or the existing account connected journal.

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

We will give the original account and the second look their own space so the development remains visible.

Coach the practice

  • Keep earlier wording intact and date additions.
  • Ask for another plausible reading before discussing a preferred interpretation.
  • Recognize that revisiting a memory can alter its apparent detail; record confidence honestly.

Debrief together

Invite participants to describe one stable element and one question that became more precise.

Adapt for the people present

Use a shared picture for beginners, allowing everyone to compare the visible details directly.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Revisit a brief journal entry after several days and mark the difference between original details and subsequent reflections.
