Participant pathway
5 steps · 25 minutes
Read the complete account once. Record the speaker, date if known, recipient, and context. Retain exact wording when available and label a remembered paraphrase as such.
Separate the word into short units that each express one idea. Keep connecting phrases so you can see how the parts relate. Mark metaphors, direct statements, invitations, and predictions.
For every unit, record what it explicitly says, one possible interpretation, and a question. Identify where your explanation adds a meaning beyond the speaker’s actual words.
Read passages relevant to the central themes. Note the passage’s original setting and its possible relationship to the word. Weigh any specific personal claim through prayer, wise counsel, and available evidence.
Read the whole word again. Write a synthesis that preserves its emphasis and degree of certainty. Choose one proportionate response and retain unresolved questions for further reflection.
Illustrative practice example
An invented word says, “You are like a lamp beside a quiet doorway, offering welcome.” The participant identifies lamp, doorway, and welcome as linked images. They consider encouragement, hospitality, and availability as possible themes, then ask whether the speaker intended a particular setting. The chosen response is a modest act of hospitality while the broader meaning remains open for reflection.
