Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 30 minutes

  1. 010–5 min

    Prepare the team

Agree on confidentiality, voluntary participation, and the recipient’s right to pause. Assign a host, a speaker, and an observer. In a group of four, add a second listener. Review the purpose of encouragement and prayer.

  2. 025–9 min

    Receive the person

The host asks what kind of prayer the recipient welcomes and explains the brief encounter. Let the person share only what they choose. Confirm whether any notes may be made and who may retain them.

  3. 039–14 min

    Listen and pray

Spend a short period in shared prayer and silence. Each team member privately notes any impression and the degree of uncertainty. The host invites a contribution when appropriate.

  4. 0414–21 min

    Share and weigh

The speaker offers one clear encouragement. Other members contribute only when invited and when it serves the recipient. Ask the recipient what they understood and whether they would like prayer or further clarification.

  5. 0521–30 min

    Close and debrief

Thank the recipient and allow them to leave freely. The team reviews accuracy of recording, consent, clarity, confidentiality, and role coordination. Retain only the agreed notes and identify one improvement for the next encounter.

Illustrative practice example

See the practice take shape.

A fictional team welcomes a person seeking prayer for perseverance. One member senses an image of a steady flame and explains it as a possible encouragement. The host invites the recipient to respond and offers a brief prayer. The observer later notes that the team left enough time for the person to speak and suggests a clearer explanation of note retention.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

How did each role serve the recipient?

  2. 2

Which contribution needed further weighing or clarification?

  3. 3

What information did the recipient authorize the team to retain?

Your practice outcome

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

Explain the roles and invite each person to choose the degree of participation that feels appropriate.

Coach the practice

  • Keep the host responsible for time, consent, and closure.
  • Invite correction and record the recipient’s words accurately.
  • Follow the ministry setting’s safeguarding process when a participant discloses a serious concern.

Debrief together

Invite the observer to describe behavior they actually observed and one specific improvement.

Adapt for the people present

Use a fictional recipient scenario or allow participants to observe their first round.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Before the next team encounter, review one agreed improvement and the setting’s safeguarding contact.
