Dream record
Amina crossed a field covered in fresh snow and entered a brick archive whose door stood open. Inside, hundreds of brass bells rested in shallow drawers. Each bell was silent. A white scarf hung from the ceiling and moved although the windows were closed. Amina carried a red notebook, yet every time she opened it, the pages showed only the words she had already written before sleep. At the final cabinet she found one empty drawer and a small wooden clapper. She remembered hearing a bell at the beginning of the dream, then realized she could not tell whether the sound had occurred inside the dream or while waking. She wrote, ‘sound uncertain,’ placed the clapper in the empty drawer, and closed it gently. Snow began melting outside in twelve narrow channels. The water flowed toward the archive without entering. A group of children appeared at the far edge of the field and waited. Amina carried the red notebook toward them. The final scene held silence, clear footprints, and a feeling of patient readiness.
