References should match the level of access
A private-home residency creates deeper access than a public workshop. Reference depth should therefore correspond to lodging, household access, transportation, professional work, spiritual formation, and shared time. The aim is responsible mutual care and informed suitability.
Use more than one relational vantage point
A balanced process may include a professional or ministry reference and one or more personal character references. Different witnesses can speak to structured responsibility, long-term relational conduct, communication, reliability, boundaries, conflict repair, and conduct within homes or close community.
Invite references with direct knowledge
A strong reference has observed the applicant in relevant settings and can provide concrete examples. Titles alone offer limited evidence. Ask each reference how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant, how recently they interacted, and which settings inform their responses.
Ask consistent, behavior-based questions
Use the same core questions for every applicant. Ask about dependability, respectful communication, shared-space awareness, responses to limits, repair after misunderstanding, confidentiality, care of property, adaptability, independent functioning, and any concern relevant to a one-week shared-home experience.
Protect confidentiality and fairness
Tell applicants how references will be used, who will review them, how long records will be retained, and when information may be disclosed for safety or legal obligations. Store responses securely, limit access, and avoid collecting unrelated sensitive information. Apply standards consistently while allowing reasonable accommodation.
Interpret patterns rather than isolated adjectives
Look for specific examples, agreement across sources, context, recency, and relevance. A vague superlative carries less information than a grounded account. A concern deserves proportionate follow-up, clarification, and documentation rather than automatic interpretation outside its context.
Remember that screening is one layer
References work alongside identity confirmation, written agreements, applicant conversation, house orientation, privacy planning, emergency preparation, communication norms, and ongoing observation. No single screening method replaces thoughtful hosting and clear boundaries.
Honor mutual discernment
The host assesses suitability, and the applicant assesses the host and program. Written policies, transparent expectations, opportunities for questions, and freedom to decline allow both people to choose responsibly. A decision to wait or select another pathway can be a faithful outcome.
