What you will practice

A clear purpose.

Develop a brief encouragement from a chosen prompt while identifying observation, personal association, biblical connection, and proposed application.

Bring with you

  • Original or appropriately licensed cards showing a lantern, bridge, seed, doorway, or other simple subject
  • A Bible
  • Paper
  • A timer

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Biblical foundations

Read with attention to context.

Jeremiah 1:11–12 Read the passage

In the passage

Jeremiah recounts a particular prophetic encounter involving an almond branch and its interpretation.

For this practice

Attend closely to an image before exploring meaning; the passage supplies a biblical example while this activity remains a contemporary practice exercise.

1 Corinthians 14:3 Read the passage

In the passage

Paul describes prophecy in relation to strengthening, encouragement, and consolation within the church.

For this practice

Evaluate the proposed message by the care and encouragement it offers the recipient.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 18 minutes

  1. 010–3 min

    Choose and describe

Choose a card intentionally and describe three visible features. For a written prompt, identify its ordinary meaning and the words that draw your attention. Record these observations before connecting them with a person or a spiritual theme.

  2. 023–7 min

    Explore associations

Pray for wisdom and list two possible associations. Note whether each comes from Scripture, a personal memory, a cultural connection, or a spontaneous impression. Keep the prompt visible and preserve the difference between its features and your interpretation.

  3. 037–11 min

    Ground the encouragement

Read a relevant passage in context. Choose one modest theme that could support the recipient, such as patience, faithful service, or hope. Write a two sentence encouragement and identify what makes its language respectful and understandable.

  4. 0411–15 min

    Share with permission

Ask your partner whether they would like to hear the encouragement. Explain the card and the association briefly. Offer the words for consideration and leave room for the partner to respond in their own way. Keep the exchange within the agreed time.

  5. 0515–18 min

    Review the path

Ask what your partner understood and what they would like clarified. Record the path from card to association to encouragement. Identify any leap in interpretation and revise the wording. Close with a voluntary prayer related to the theme.

Fictional practice example

See the practice take shape.

A card shows a lantern beside a path. A participant observes the small light and the nearby ground, then considers faithful attention to the next step. After reading Psalm 119:105 in its setting, she offers encouragement to seek wisdom for the next ordinary decision. The selected card functions as a reflective prompt; its selection carries no prediction.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

Which details belonged to the card, and which did I contribute?

  2. 2

How did the biblical passage shape the proposed encouragement?

  3. 3

What did the recipient find clear or helpful?

Your practice outcome

Record three observations, two associations, one contextual biblical connection, and a revised encouragement.

Opening invitation

These cards give us a shared starting point for observation and careful communication.

Coach the practice

  • Use images that are appropriate for the setting and accessible to the participants.
  • Invite multiple plausible associations before choosing one.
  • Keep messages within encouragement and avoid assigning decisions, identities, or outcomes to the recipient.

Debrief together

Have each pair describe how the wording changed after feedback.

Adapt for the people present

Provide tactile objects or verbal descriptions for participants who benefit from another mode of access. Participants may choose their own prompt.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Repeat with the same card on another day and compare how context changes your associations.
