Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 18 minutes

  1. 010–3 min

    Choose a meaningful purpose

Identify the kind of encouragement you hope to offer, such as appreciation, comfort, or a scriptural reminder. Write why this might serve another person. Notice your present level of readiness and select a pace that allows thoughtful participation.

  2. 023–7 min

    Prepare privately

Write two sentences of encouragement. Ground them in a clear biblical principle or an accurately observed quality. If you include a spiritual impression, identify it as something you are offering for consideration. Read the sentences aloud to yourself and simplify unfamiliar language.

  3. 037–11 min

    Practice with a partner

Ask permission to share the encouragement. Speak slowly for up to 45 seconds. Invite your partner to describe what they understood and what felt helpful. Receive their response without adding explanations that extend beyond the original thought.

  4. 0411–15 min

    Choose a next level

Select one option: revise and repeat with the same partner, share with another consenting partner, or offer a short reflection in the small group. A participant may remain at any level. Take a quiet moment before speaking and retain the same care for consent.

  5. 0515–18 min

    Name the learning

Record the action you completed, what helped you communicate, and one improvement for next time. Thank the recipient for their feedback. Choose one realistic future opportunity for encouragement and explain how you will seek permission.

Fictional practice example

See the practice take shape.

A participant writes a note appreciating a volunteer who patiently welcomes newcomers. After reading it privately, she asks the volunteer for permission to share. The volunteer finds the concrete observation meaningful. Her next step is to offer a similarly thoughtful encouragement to another person during the following week.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

Which level allowed me to speak with the greatest care and clarity?

  2. 2

How did the recipient respond in their own words?

  3. 3

What small practice would strengthen my readiness for the next opportunity?

Your practice outcome

Complete one chosen practice level, receive feedback, and identify a specific next opportunity.

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

Each person can choose a practice level that supports thoughtful courage today.

Coach the practice

  • Affirm the quality of listening and consent alongside the act of speaking.
  • Offer a written participation route at every stage.
  • Keep feedback specific: clarity, pace, warmth, and the relevance of the words.

Debrief together

Invite participants to describe a completed action and the practical support that made it possible.

Adapt for the people present

Use written messages read privately for participants who prefer writing. Online groups can practice in pairs with an agreed time limit.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Offer one consent based encouragement this week, then reflect on clarity and kindness using the same feedback questions.
