Preserve meaning and connect insight with action.

What you will practice

A clear purpose.

Create one biblical connection that distinguishes the text’s teaching, a possible thematic parallel, and a proportionate application.

Bring with you

  • One brief impression or symbol
  • A Bible with surrounding paragraphs available
  • Writing materials

Choose your level of participation. Sharing, prayer, quiet observation, and a pause are all available.

Biblical foundations

Read with attention to context.

2 Timothy 3:14–17 Read the passage

In the passage

Paul describes Scripture as forming and equipping the believer for good work.

For this practice

Let the passage guide understanding and character as you consider an experience.

Acts 17:10–12 Read the passage

In the passage

The Berean hearers receive the message attentively and examine the Scriptures.

For this practice

Practice attentive examination by reading the relevant passage directly.

Passage links open the King James Version. Context and application notes are original teaching summaries.

Participant pathway

One attentive step at a time.

5 steps · 22 minutes

  1. 010–3 min

    State the question

Describe the impression in one sentence and identify the theme you want to examine. Record whether the connection concerns an image, a character quality, a relationship, or a proposed action.

  2. 023–9 min

    Read the surrounding text

Read the paragraph and enough surrounding material to identify the speaker, audience, situation, and purpose. Note whether the passage is narrative, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, or instruction. Write a plain language summary.

  3. 039–14 min

    Describe the connection

Explain what the passage and the impression share. Name whether you are drawing a thematic parallel, a personal application, or an interpretation of symbolism. Keep the original biblical setting visible.

  4. 0414–19 min

    Test the application

Consider how the proposed meaning fits the wider teaching about Christ, love, humility, and responsible action. Read a second relevant passage. Invite a trusted Christian teacher to help with difficult interpretive questions.

  5. 0519–22 min

    Write a grounded response

Record the reference, its contextual meaning, your possible connection, and one appropriate response. Keep any unresolved theological question available for later study.

Fictional worked example

See the practice take shape.

A participant imagines a lamp and reads Psalm 119:105 within the surrounding section. She identifies the psalm’s attention to God’s word and obedience, then proposes a personal application: seek scriptural wisdom about a current responsibility. She keeps that application distinct from claiming the image settles the decision.

Pause and reflect

What is becoming clearer?

  1. 1

What does the passage communicate in its own setting?

  2. 2

Which part of my connection is a personal application?

  3. 3

How does the application express the character taught across Scripture?

Your practice outcome

A written connection with the biblical reference, contextual summary, type of connection, practical response, and open questions.

Open the Q45 journey journal

For group leaders

Facilitator guidance

Open preparation, coaching, and debrief

Opening invitation

Invite participants to encounter the passage fully enough for its own message to shape their reflection.

Coach the practice

  • Ask for a contextual summary before discussing symbolism.
  • Provide accessible passages and a trusted study resource.
  • Allow differences among Christian interpretations to be named respectfully.

Debrief together

Invite one participant to describe the text, connection, and response in three short sentences. Encourage questions that deepen understanding.

Adapt for the people present

Read aloud, offer an accessible translation, or pair readers of different experience levels. A facilitator can supply the passage and its surrounding paragraph.

Agree on confidentiality and consent before sharing personal experiences. Invite participants to weigh impressions through Scripture, prayer, trusted counsel, and the fruit of their responses over time.

Carry it into the week

A faithful next step.

Read the selected passage again during the week and note whether its context changes your proposed application.
