Participant pathway
5 steps · 15 minutes
Ask how the person wishes to be addressed and whether they welcome the exercise. Listen to their pronunciation. A preferred name is sufficient for the activity.
Record one historical, literary, personal, or biblical association. Label its type. Check factual claims before using them; if checking is unavailable, describe the association simply as something the name brought to mind.
Ask God for love and wisdom. Consider a hopeful theme that could serve the person. Keep their own account of their life central as you explore whether the association is useful.
Ask permission to share. Explain the association briefly and offer a possible encouragement in ordinary language. Invite the person to identify what resonates and what needs clarification.
Write the exact encouragement you offered and the feedback you received. Identify one phrase that preserved freedom and one detail that would benefit from further verification.
Illustrative practice example
A fictional participant named Grace agrees to the exercise. The speaker says, “Your name brought to mind the grace of God and the value of kindness. I wonder whether encouragement through a small act of kindness might be a helpful theme for prayer this week.” Grace chooses a practical way to encourage a friend. The association is offered for consideration; her name provides a starting point for conversation.
